Sumac

(12 customer reviews)

$9.97 $7.00

All-natural, quality sumac is a complex spice–a stringent, sour, smokey, and earthy all at the same time! In the Eastern Mediterranean, sumac bushes produce clusters of red berries which after drying and grinding, provide a souring effect with a touch of sweetness. Sumac is used in cooking and as a table condiment in parts of the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Use it today in this delicious loaded hummus recipe.

Sumac is available for purchase on its own or can be found in our most popular spice bundle, the Exotic 4-pack.

Ingredients: Sumac, salt

Sadly, I see that shipping to Canada doesn’t appear to be an option. Is that correct? I’m currently using ground sumac from Lebanon distributed by Arz Fine Foods. Would love to compare the two products. Any info on shipping north of the border?

Hi Donalda! Unfortunately, we only ship within the United States at this time. We may in the near future begin shipping to Canada.

If you visit this page: https://www.themediterraneandish.com/recipes/, you can search all our recipes by typing “sumac” in the search box. You can further drill down by selecting the category of recipe in the filter. Hope that helps!

I was glad to read your description of how you source spices. I would rather pay a higher price and get a better quality item ESPECIALLY when it comes to spices. I have purchased less expensive spices that just did not seem to have the fresh clean taste I am looking forward to. I have recently discovered your Mediterranean recipes and I am thrilled to be able to produce the foods I have learned to love! And my doctor tells me how healthy these recipes are! Thanks for your website and sharing these spices. I am excited to try more of your recipes! Thank you so much!

This is the one spice I’ve never used, but would love to try! I’m wondering if this spice is one that’s more frequently used with chicken, fish, or if it might be a good flavor for soup (since it’s the start of soup season here on the east coast!)?

If someone is allergic to poison sumac plants, is this similar to that or can cause problems??

This sumac spice is not to be confused with poison sumac. Here is a great article from The Kitchn the discusses sumac spice: https://www.thekitchn.com/inside-the-spice-cabinet-sumac-67042

As for allergies, I would consult your doctor is there is any concern there.

I’m so Glad I found your site! I feel your prices are great! The reason being that these spices are very hard to find. By the time time I drove around and checked stores I was not only frustrated but spent money on fuel doing so. Thank you for having the needed supplies!

This 5 star rating is for your transparent explanation of your pricing and business philosophy in the above response. I appreciate the clarity. Found you by searching for Arabic Rice. Love your recipe for Lebanese Rice. Just like my grandmother taught my mother to make. Am now a fan!

I’m sorry to say this but the price is way too much. I have a 250 gram pack I bought last week for USD $3.20. This is only 65 grams you are selling for $6.99? I’m sure you won’t show this but I’m totally shocked Suzy.

Hi Sue! Thank you for your comment/question. I am actually glad to hear your thoughts, as I’m sure some might wonder the same. Believe it or not, our wholesale cost for sourcing the sumac spice alone is more than the $3.20 you paid for yours. That does not even include additional business and packaging costs.
I have tried my fair share of sumac from several different places…everything from Eastern Mediterranean stores, which provide sumac at very low prices, to higher-end specialty spice shops where sumac may run at $12 per bottle! There is a wide range both in price but also in quality. I don’t take lightly that our prices may seem high to some, our sumac is of superior quality and taste, and as I said, it cost us more to source it than what you mentioned you paid. Here is more about our spices:
      – They are sourced from top quality suppliers from different corners of the world and the Mediterranean basin
      – All-Natural. Every spice or spice blend contains only raw commodity herbs and spices; no colors or fillers
      – Non-irradiated. Not a single spice or spice blend has been treated with radiation.
      – We are doing this the old-fashioned way! Our supplier package only to order, and we, in turn, order in small batches to ensure freshness and flavor integrity (hence limited quantity!)
      – Our supplier operates Orthodox Union Kosher Certified facilities, and under the highest of safety and quality standards
I hope this explains some. Thank you again for the question. And please know, we offer quality spices and extra virgin olive oils because these are the ingredients I personally use, and they have made a world of difference in the quality and taste of the meals i offer my family. But we offer them here also as a service to our readers, yet my main focus will continue to be offering free Mediterranean recipes for all to enjoy. Thank you!

Is there another spice that could be substituted for sumac?

Not really. Sumac is a unique spice that provides earthy tartness which is difficult to replicate with other spices. It can sometimes be used in place of salt.

I found this site by accident and i’m so excited about it. We lived in Israel for years, and i miss the food. Periodically we go back and i make sure i bring spices back to America with me, but it’s good to know i can order things here. Plus i’m looking forward to the recipes. Thanks for doing this.
