Freekeh is a nutty, smoky grain with a pleasant chewy texture. Because of its rich flavor and how simple it is to prepare, freekeh can be used in a variety of different ways.

Freekeh is an ancient grain popular in the Levant and North Africa. It’s made from young, green durum wheat that’s been roasted or smoked, and then polished to remove the shells. Freekeh has a distinctly rich, smoky, nutty flavor that pairs beautifully with warm spices and fresh herbs. Its pleasant chewy texture makes it extra hearty, and an excellent substitute for rice or pasta.

• Rich in dietary fiber and protein
• Rich in vitamins and minerals
• Complex carbohydrates and low glycemic index
• Made in Turkey
• Net weight: 1000 g

How to Use

  • Rinse 1 cup freekeh and look through it briefly to check for any debris and pick them out.
  • Combine with 2 1/2 cups of water or broth in a saucepan.
  • Bring to a boil.
  • Reduce the heat, cover, and simmer over low heat until the grains are tender and slightly chewy, about 40 minutes.
  • Drain any remaining water.

Suzy's Tips

Freekeh works very well in a variety of dishes and its flavor goes particularly well with warming spices and herbs. You can use it as you do other grains–as a simple side dish, tossed in a salad, or added in a soup like I do with barley. It also works well as a bed for a saucy protein dish, like shrimp fra diavolo, wine-braised chicken thighs, or Lebanese-style meatballs.

Please note during the cold winter months, our olive oils can sometimes freeze during transit and cause some of the natural waxes to separate from the oil, causing some cloudiness or floating particles. This is completely normal and does not impact the quality of the olive oil in any way. To thaw, simply leave the olive oil in room temperature. Do not in any way warm up the olive oil in a microwave or put it in direct sunlight. Olive oil is best stored in a cool dark room to preserve its life and quality.

So Yummy

I'll probably never go back to boring potatoes as a side. The Freekeh was so good solo and the Herby Freekeh Salad is going to be made on repeat.

The package had broken open in the box. Had to trash it. So I couldn’t say if it good. Never got a credit for it. I tried to contact the company. No answer back.

Hello Michelle! We are so sorry to hear that the Freekeh was damaged in transit. We will be reaching out to you shortly.

I made the Fire Roasted Tomato, Freekeh, Blackeyed Pea Soup from the Mediterranean Dish cookbook. It was really good. I've never tried Freekeh before and was worried that it would be to "wheatty".But it added a really nice flavor to the soup. I will definitely cook with it more often.
