A staple Mediterranean diet ingredient - tender, chewy pearled barley is a versatile grain that is nutritious, easy to cook, and can be used in many ways.

Pearled barley is an ancient grain with a pleasant chewy texture and a slightly nutty flavor. It is also quite nutritious and rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Pearled barley is the most common form of barley, and it cooks at a much quicker rate than typical barley. This is because the outer layers of the barley have been partially removed, leaving only a small, smooth pearl – hence, the term “pearled”. An ideal alternative to rice, pearled barley adds heft to soups and stews, makes a wonderful pilaf, and can even be cooked into a hearty porridge.

Suzy's Tips

I love using barley in soups, salads, or as a base for delicious dinner bowls. I have used it as a stuffing for squash, Persian Soup Jo (Chicken Barley Soup), and more. When I'm in the mood for something sweet, a bowl of warm barley with warmed milk and a good drizzle of Greek honey is my breakfast cereal.

Please note during the cold winter months, our olive oils can sometimes freeze during transit and cause some of the natural waxes to separate from the oil, causing some cloudiness or floating particles. This is completely normal and does not impact the quality of the olive oil in any way. To thaw, simply leave the olive oil in room temperature. Do not in any way warm up the olive oil in a microwave or put it in direct sunlight. Olive oil is best stored in a cool dark room to preserve its life and quality.
